Since 1988 the town has been listed as World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. A good example is the historical town centre overlooked by its marvellous cathedral, a living symbol of Gothic art. With its rivers, canals, pools and ponds, Strasbourg is completely ringed by water and waterways. Cradled by the two arms of the Ill, its mostly pedestrianised town centre is perfect for strolling and cycling.

City of Strasbourg
As the home town of a number of cutting-edge universities, of the European Pharmacopoeia or of the European Science Foundation, Strasbourg is a city synonymous with research and development.
In 2005, with the awarding of the "centre of excellence for global competitiveness" label in the field of therapeutic innovation, Alsace has become an international centre of excellence developing the medicines of the future, under the auspices of Alsace Biovalley, the regional agency for the promotion of the biotechnologies.
The "vehicle of the future" centre of excellence label makes the region even more attractive for the vehicle and automotive equipment manufacturers, many of whom already have sites here.

The town is globally renowned in the field of classical, lyrical and contemporary music thanks among other things to its Philharmonic Orchestra, the Strasbourg percussion ensemble and the National Rhine Opera.
As a city known for its willingness to promote expression and emerging cultures, Strasbourg offers artists a wide range of places to stay and work. The Strasbourg National Theatre (the Théâtre National de Strasbourg or “TNS”) and its school, the Théâtre Jeune Public (Youth Theatre), the "Maillon - Théâtre de Strasbourg" and the Laiterie each year provide countless sources of creativity, attracting theatre troupes, actors and directors from far and wide.
The town's diverse cultural scene is backed up by a number of superb museums (the Alsatian Museum, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, or the Zoological Museum, etc).
